On Friday, January 2, 2009 I attended a demonstration against the violence in Gaza, held by the Middle East Peace Forum and Al-Awda/PRRC.
I was so inspired by the number and diversity of people gathered to express their disgust with this unfair and seemingly never ending war. Since I have moved back to Cleveland I have thought that it was so devoid of culture and global concern. I am happy to say that I was wrong.
I am so proud and grateful to have been a part of this event.
A woman asked, while we were marching to Public Square, whether anyone thought this one event would make any difference.
I truly think that it can. Maybe not in the immediate way that many would hope it does, but by those strangers gathering together in support of a common concern, all of our devotion to the cause should be strengthened. We know that we are not alone in our beliefs, and sometimes surprised by those who unexpectedly share the view. It is important to go out and show support when something is important. People are so unlikely to speak up when they feel they are alone, especially when they are dealing with a controversial issue. It is important to remember that we are never alone in our thoughts. If all the subjugated populations could find a common goal to work towards, they would be unstoppable.
